Solo Running? Stay Safe With These Tips

If you’re determined to keep up with those walks and runs you might have taken up during lockdown v 1.0, even through the chill and dark nights of autumn and winter, then look no further for some tips on how to keep yourself safe.

1. Running at night?

Stay visible, and even bright, and as we said in this blog, make hi-vis your friend.Even consider a chest light to help you not only see what’s coming up but also to help others see you too. Think about what’s reflective on your kit, and could you add some extra lights to make you super visible? 

2. Know what your route’s like in the dark

A path or an alley that’s a-ok during the light evenings might take on a new personality at night. Be mindful of spots where people might congregate, or that might lead from a busier route. Know the fastest way outta there if you need to get moving, quick.

3. Stay ‘in it’

Being alert not only helps you be aware of what you’re doing - how each step lands, what the path is like, are there any dips or potholes that might unsteady you? It helps you not only improve your chances of staying upright, but also limits risk of any turned ankles, shocks to your knees, and more

4. Know when you feel the happiest running

Does an early start in darkness make you feel better than running at night? Do you have commitments that mean that realistically you wouldn’t get out until after you’d feel safe? Then don’t feel like a failure. In a global pandemic, sometimes getting up, brushing your teeth and eating enough are good enough for the day.

5. Follow your buds on Strava (or other route tracking apps)

Tell them where you’re headed and how long you think you’ll be out for. The app will tell them when you’ve logged a journey, plus if you’re competitive, you can challenge each other to best each other’s times!

6. Be Loud if you need to be!

If, what we hope doesn’t happen, happens, and you find yourself in a situation with an attacker, being loud is a great defence. If you need to scream, scream LOUD.
